Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV) “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” There are seasons when everything feels clear. Doors open. Prayers feel answered. The path makes sense. And then there are the other seasons. The quiet ones. The confusing ones. The “God, what are You even doing?” ones. If you’ve been asking, What is God calling me to do right now? — you’re not alone. I’ve been there. More than once. And here’s what I’ve learned: God’s calling in a season isn’t always about a new assignment. Sometimes it’s about alignment.Let’s talk about how to recognize what He’s asking of you right now. 1. Pay Attention to What Feels Heavy — and What Feels Alive Not everything that’s hard is wrong. But there’s a difference between something being challenging and something being draining. When God calls you into something, even if it stretches you, there’s life in it. There’s grace for it. There’s a quiet strength underneath it. But when you’re operating outside of your season? It feels forced. Exhausting. Like you’re constantly pushing a door that won’t open. Ask yourself:
2. Look at What God Is Pruning Sometimes we think calling only shows up in what’s being added. But what if it’s also in what’s being removed? Relationships shift. Opportunities close. Old habits lose their appeal. Things you once clung to suddenly don’t fit anymore. Pruning can feel like loss. But it’s actually preparation. If something keeps falling away, instead of fighting to keep it, ask:
3. Notice the Desires That Won’t Leave You Alone There are certain ideas that keep circling back. Certain dreams that won’t quiet down. Certain burdens that feel personal. Pay attention to those. Not every desire is divine — but the ones that stay with you? The ones that grow stronger instead of fading? Those deserve your attention. What do you care about deeply? What injustice stirs something in you? What kind of impact do you daydream about when you’re being honest? God often plants the seed of calling as a desire long before it becomes an assignment. And sometimes the reason you can’t shake it… is because you weren’t meant to. 4. Consider the Season You’re Actually In We get in trouble when we try to force harvest in a planting season. Every season has purpose. There are seasons of building. Seasons of resting. Seasons of healing. Seasons of hidden preparation. If you’re exhausted and healing, your calling may not be to launch something — it may be to recover. If you’re learning, your calling may not be to lead — it may be to sit at the table and grow. If you’re in a quiet season, it may not be punishment. It may be protection. Instead of asking, “What big thing should I be doing?” ask, “What does obedience look like today?” Sometimes calling is as simple as:
5. Listen for Peace, Not Noise God rarely shouts over chaos. We live in a world of constant opinions. Social media. Advice. Pressure to “maximize” every moment. But calling doesn’t come from comparison. It comes from connection. If you’re feeling confused, create space. Turn down the noise. Journal. Pray. Take a walk without your phone. Clarity usually follows quiet. You may not get a lightning-bolt revelation. Most of the time, it’s a gentle nudge. A steady pull. A repeated whisper. And here’s something important: anxiety and urgency are not the same thing as divine direction. If it feels frantic, rushed, and fear-driven — pause. God’s timing brings peace, even when it stretches you. 6. Ask: Where Is the Grace? This one changed everything for me. Grace is God’s empowerment. It’s the strength that meets you when you step into something He’s asked you to do. When you’re walking in your current calling, there’s grace for it. You’re not constantly striving. You’re not performing for approval. You’re not trying to prove yourself. Yes, it can be hard. Yes, it can stretch you. But you’re sustained. If you’re constantly burnt out, resentful, and depleted, it may not mean you’re weak. It may mean you’re misaligned. Calling and grace go together. Where do you feel supported by God right now? Where do you feel like He keeps meeting you? That’s a clue. 7. Understand That Calling Evolves This is where so many people get stuck. They think calling is one thing. One title. One lifelong assignment. But seasons change. And so do assignments. The God who called you five years ago is still calling you — but He may be calling you differently now. Don’t cling to an old version of yourself just because it once fit. You’re allowed to grow. You’re allowed to pivot. You’re allowed to outgrow what once felt right. Faithfulness in one season prepares you for the next. 8. Obedience Comes Before Clarity Here’s the part no one loves. Sometimes you won’t fully understand what God is doing until after you obey. You may not get the five-year plan. You may not even get the five-week plan. But you will get the next step. And the next step is enough. God rarely reveals the whole staircase. He reveals the step you’re standing on. So instead of waiting for full clarity, ask:
9. If You’re Unsure, Start With Faithfulness When everything feels unclear, go back to basics. Love well. Serve where you are. Honor your commitments. Spend time with God. Grow your character. You cannot miss what God has for you when your heart is aligned with Him. Let me say that again. You cannot miss what God has for you when your heart is aligned with Him. He is not hiding your purpose like a puzzle you have to solve perfectly. He is a Father. He leads gently. Your job is not to decode the future. Your job is to stay close. A Final Truth... If you’re in a season of wondering, that does not mean you’re behind. Sometimes the question itself is part of the process. The waiting stretches you. The uncertainty deepens you. The stillness prepares you. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to be willing. Willing to listen. Willing to let go. Willing to move when He says move. Willing to stay when He says stay. That’s calling. Not a platform. Not applause. Not a perfectly mapped plan. Just daily obedience. And friend? If you’re seeking Him, if you’re asking, if your heart is open — you are already closer than you think. Now take a breath. Ask Him what this season is about. And trust that He’s already speaking. ~Pastor Danyelle🌸🍃 Want to dive deeper...Click the button below to see other... |
